The Stećci, which inspired our program "Heretical Angels", are monumental medieval tombstones that lie scattered across the landscape of Bosnia-Herzegovina, of Serbia, Montenegro and central Croatia. The cemeteries, which date from 12th to 16th centuries, are laid out in rows, as was the common custom in Europe from the Middle Ages. They are the country's most legendary symbol. Their most remarkable feature are their decorative motifs, many of which remain enigmatic to this day.
Since June 2016, the Stećci are officially part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
